Oregon Angel Fund

Turn the rebranding of Oregon Angel Fund as Oregon Venture Fund, into an opportunity for local design students to gain real-life experience and mentoring.

Oregon is a state that prides itself in local business development and growth.

As such, Oregon Angel Fund is an organization that excells in discovering new local businesses that show potential, investing and helping them grow into companies worthy of the “Made in Oregon” stamp of approval.

So when OAF came to AKQA Portland looking for help to rebrand themselves as Oregon Venture Fund, it was only natural that they took the same approach to their own company as they do to businesses they invest in—keeping it local and focussed on development from within.

Turn the rebranding of Oregon Angel Fund as Oregon Venture Fund, into an opportunity for local design students to gain real-life experience and mentoring.

Working with local universities, AKQA selected 10 design teams comprised of 2 designers each, to participate in a month long competition that would ultimately decide the new brand identity for Oregon Venture Fund. But more than just a competition, students were to participate in workshops, mentorship meetings and presentations, as they developed and sharpened their designs.

Each step of the process was made to highly local, highly inspirational and offering true mentorship to participating teams.

After being briefed at AKQA Portland, teams spent a week developing first round designs. During this time each team had a one-on-one session with AKQA design directors, helping them to refine their designs and inspirations. After presenting their first designs internally, the selection was narrowed down to 3 teams.

Top teams then had a chance to spend time with 2 world renowned designers, Adam Garcia and Mike Erdenberger—both veterans in the local Portland design scene. After further development and refinement, students got to do an internal presentation to AKQA creatives as a rehearsal for their final presentation to OVF.

Going above and beyond, students truly brought their best to the table.
